Capital District
The Capital District is the civic heart of North Carolina, where government, history, culture, and greenspace come together in one of Downtown Raleigh’s most recognizable neighborhoods. Anchored by the historic North Carolina State Capitol and Legislative Building, the district showcases some of the city’s most iconic and stately Greek Revival architecture and serves as the center of state government.
Beyond its role as North Carolina’s center of government, the Capital District offers a rich cultural experience. Visitors can explore the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, one of the state’s most-visited museums, while the North Carolina Museum of History prepares for its next chapter with a major renovation. Hidden gems like Gallery C and Burning Coal Theatre add to the district’s creative character, showcasing local and regional artists throughout the year.
Known for a peaceful atmosphere, the Capital District also offers a quieter side of Downtown Raleigh. Expansive public spaces like the North Carolina State Capitol grounds, Halifax Mall, and North Carolina Freedom Park invite visitors to relax, reflect, and gather, while beloved restaurants and some of Downtown’s most inviting patios make the district a favorite for lunch meetings, afternoon strolls, and evening dining. At its northern gateway, The Longleaf Hotel blends midcentury charm with modern hospitality, welcoming visitors to a neighborhood where civic importance and everyday enjoyment meet.
