Outdoor movie series to draw thousands to City Plaza for 80s flicks
RALEIGH, NC (May 12, 2015) – The Downtown Raleigh Alliance (DRA) is excited to announce that the PNC Downtown Raleigh Movie Series, will feature a “Flashback Friday” theme this summer. For six Fridays (May 22, May 29, June 5, June 12, June 19, and June 26) from 6 pm-10:30 pm, City Plaza will transform into an urban cinema center featuring beloved films from the 1980s on an outdoor screen, local food trucks, microbrew beer tent, and live DJ music, expecting to draw over 6,000 to downtown Raleigh. The events are free admission and open to the public.
Offering a unique summer experience, downtowners will enjoy 80s classics on a large 40 foot by 60 foot outdoor movie screen at City Plaza. The film lineup is as followed: (May 22, Ghostbusters; May 29, Ferris Bueller's Day Off; June 5, The Goonies; June 12, Back to the Future; June 19, The Karate Kid; and June 26, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, a documentary from Durham's Full Frame Festival). Chair sponsor, Red Hat, will be providing 250 chairs for movie goers, however, due to limited seating, the DRA encourages the public to bring blankets and lawn chairs.
To elevate the “Flashback Friday” experience, moviegoers will have a chance to jam out to 80s tunes from DJ Alex Choi of Vox Entertainment. During the show, patrons can dine on local food truck fare and sip on microbrews.
“The PNC Downtown Raleigh Movie Series enhances downtown’s quality of life by offering a memorable outdoor experience during the summer,” said Jean Carroll, Special Events Coordinator of the DRA. “By hosting a throwback 80s themed series, we seek to attract the growing millennial crowd to downtown’s City Plaza on Friday evenings to revel in nostalgia.”
Last year’s event drew over 6,000 to City Plaza, and the DRA is aiming to surpass that number. The first event will take place Friday, May 22 featuring the comedy film Ghostbusters.
PNC Bank has returned as the title sponsor to support downtown Raleigh’s economic development.
