Karen Coachman is a painter based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her subject matter includes still life and interior scenes, portraits, as well as urban and rural outdoor scenes. Exploration of color is characteristic of her work, often using oils and acrylics as primary mediums. Karen has exhibited work locally and several of her pieces reside in private collections. She has also painted commissioned interior murals in private homes, public school buildings, and for non-profit organizations. Karen earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art from Wake Forest University.

Karen created this piece specifically for the location near Nash Square. Painted in gouache and acrylic, this homage to the cardinal in different settings and seasons highlights the beauty of our state bird. Illustrations of nature in an urban setting remind the viewer of our connection to the environment and our duty to preserve and protect natural spaces.
