Science fiction and fantasy can accomplish all the same things as other genres, except it can also include dragons and spaceships—who wouldn’t want to write that? Writing the SFF novel is a class aimed towards the aspiring SFF novelist. It will include overarching craft lessons about plot, character, and pacing; as well as genre-specific lessons such as world-building, language, and technology and magic systems. The class will reference one sci-fi novel and one fantasy novel as well as analyze several short stories from SFF heavyweights like Ursula K Le Guin, Octavia Butler, and Ted Chiang. Because this is a writing class, students will also write! This class includes a workshop component in which students will read and offer feedback to one another. All students will come away from this class with one chapter of their novel as well as the bones of an outline.
