This season Artspace presents new exhibitions in both Galleries 1 and 2: Jan-Ru Wan's solo exhibition When We Are Still Together 當我們同在一起, and A-Piece-A-Part with work by Regina Jestrow and Allan Rosenbaum.
Gallery 1 exhibition When We Are Still Together 當我們同在一起 features work by Taiwanese-American artist Jan-Ru Wan. Wan uses textile installations to explore the delicate tensions that exist in her experience as an artist, mother, and immigrant. The immersive nature of the work creates a space of contemplation and reflection for the viewer to examine broader cultural and social issues that inform the artist’s personal experience. The movement of fabric along with the muted palette and use of traditional textile techniques evokes a sense of calm in the midst of our conflict fraught world. Through this space of beauty, the artist invites us to confront the chaos around us with resolve and faith in the positive power of humanity. The exhibition is comprised of three bodies of work: When We Are Still Together, Under Your Breath, and The Story of Survival. When We Are Still Together is on display through February 12, 2023.
A-Piece-A-Part, features quilts by artist Regina Jestrow and biomorphic sculptures by artist Allan Rosenbaum. Jestrow and Rosenbaum have rich art practices that are rooted in a space of fine craft and art, where material and technique are celebrated and the artists’ labor is embodied in the finished works. Both artists incorporate textiles, using distinctive processes to piece together fabric in a coalescence of fragmented parts to realize their finished forms. The works in this exhibition invite viewers to pause and consider the making of a thing. In taking a moment to understand the piecing together of each of these parts, we are allowed an intimate glimpse at these artists’ unique voices, and an appreciation for the creative potential in all of us. A-Piece-A-Part is on exhibition in Gallery 2 through February 12, 2023.
