If you are not familiar with these wineries now, you will be glad to get to know them as they are on the forefront of interesting winemaking in the US.
Boedecker Cellars - est. 2003
Husband-and-wife team Stewart Boedecker and Athena Pappas from Oregon’s Willamette Valley agree that Pinot is the perfect grape. But when it comes to style, they go in different directions. Guided by both tradition and science, they practice natural, traditional methods; minimal intervention is the word, hands off combined with attention to detail is our way. Everything they do is literally by hand, from harvesting, sorting, stirring and filling barrels. Lab analysis is done by nose; smell. Fermenting with native yeasts from the vineyard highlights the characteristics of each vineyard, bringing every aspect of terroir into the cellar.
Newfound Wines - est. 2016
Newfound Wines is a manifestation of a shared passion for wine and discovery between Matt and Audra Naumann—wine industry veterans and an agriculturally-motivated family. In 2016, they founded a 40 acre ranch, vineyard and winery in California’s Sierra Foothills to establish a legacy for their family and realize the dream of becoming first generation grape growers and independent wine producers.
Smith Wine Story - est. 2014
“Drink what you love, love what you drink,” Eric often said to Alison. Story Wine Cellars is the tale of true love. Established in 2014 after a successful kickstarter campaign, Smith Story Wines embody a respect for the land, kindness for the grower and, love from the winemaker. Each vineyard they work with is owned by families, as they want to ensure their present and future success as grape growers. The wines show restraint, balance and integrity of the grape. Their winemaking philosophy is to utilize classic, old world techniques and let the grapes and sense of place where they are grown both speak for themselves.
These great husband and wife teams will share their stories about partnership in the wine trade. Join as they discuss what it’s like to own and operate small independent wineries in California and Oregon. Athena Pappas and Stewart Boedecker of Willamette Valley, Oregon will share two of their fabulous wines. Following will be Audra and Matt Chapman of Newfound Wines in Napa Valley with their unique takes on life as first generation wine makers and growers. Ali and Eric Story present their lovely Cabernet Franc and tales of their almost eight year old winery that they founded in Sonoma with funding from Kickstarter. These unique situations will help us learn about not only fantastic wines, but what it’s like when it’s a family affair to operate them.
