Ever wondered why setting matters? Come learn from passionate writer of place Isabel as they explore tools used to create memorable locations and dive into readings that use setting as more than just backdrop. Each class we’ll visit a different location around Raleigh (the first three will be walkable from the Redbud space–the last class will take place at the North Carolina Museum of Art) and talk about how that location’s mood, history, and appearance might help us understand how to better write our own fictional locations. Through the writings of Randall Kenan, Sandra Cisneros, Shirley Jackson, and more, we’ll unpack different ways that setting can have agency, change a story, and even play villain. This is also a workshop class where students will submit 1 short story or 1 novel chapter for workshop.
