Have you ever tried to talk yourself into calming down without any success? If you could think your way out of a problem, you would have done it already. Our nervous system automatically responds to stress without us having to think about it. On the flip side, our nervous system also recognizes calm on an unconscious level. Therefore, instead of “thinking” our way through stressful experiences, we need to come into our bodies. We can do this through movement and sensory resourcing, which helps us reduce stress by bringing our bodies back to a state of safety. This can also be referred to as nervous system regulation, which is central to physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Interestingly, nervous system regulation is not entirely about finding calmness. Instead, it’s about coming into the present moment and connecting to yourself. This supports a flexible and resilient nervous system that can move between states as needed. Please note: If you’re often disconnected from self or dissociated, coming back to self can be activating at first. By taking it slow and getting curious, this will improve over time.

Brit Guerin (she/they) is thrilled to offer their new series, “Regulate: A Supplement to Mental Health Therapy”. This small group series will include guided experiences, while also being exploratory with space to ask questions. We will practice ways to regulate our nervous system such as grounding, orienting, movement, and breath work. We will also use tools like sound, essential oils, and physical props to add nourishment and safety through our sensory system. Practicing these tools in a shared space will help you shift from activated states to more regulated states throughout your day to day. This helps to increase resilience, improve focus and thoughts, and reduce symptoms that you may be experiencing.

This series is for you if:
-You are in therapy and want more time to practice stress management tools
-You cognitively “know” what you need to be doing to manage stress but can’t apply the information in your life
-You have strong emotional reactions to triggers and want to decrease the intensity of your reactions
-You have intense somatic reactions to triggers (i.e. fight, flight, freeze) and want support processing these
-Many other reasons…please reach out if you’d like to schedule a consultation to see if this series would be a good fit for you
