As a fiction writer, poetry might seem aloof, intimidating, confusing. But poetry and fiction aren't in opposition; they're secret lovers, deeply similar at the core. In this generative craft class, we'll explore the poetry basics while paying specific attention to the kinship between poetry and fiction. We'll read widely, pulling from poets who also write fiction: Dennis Cooper, Patricia Lockwood, Ocean Vuong, Lucille Clifton, to name a few. This class prioritizes the creative process: students will emerge with new poems and an expanded reading library.
