Gallery C is pleased to present 17 new oil paintings by the legendary artist Al Gury, who remains the head of the painting department at the esteemed Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Al Gury describes himself as a painter, writer, teacher and animal rescuer. Al Gury states that this dramatic , new body of work represents a shift for him. For years he was known as a Tonalist with a more naturalistic approach. Two years ago, Al Gury took a trip to the south of France and painted where Matisse painted at the beginning of the Fauvist movement. Gury always loved the Fauvist painters from 1904-1910 and had always taught and lectured on the period. Al Gury felt the impulse to change on this trip, having recently suffered a wrenching change in his personal life (an arsonist set fire to his building and everything was lost). Al Gury continued to paint landscapes, still life, and portraiture but he began to explore more creative and interpretive color. This impacted the composition and the feel. Al Gury comments, “This new direction has been wonderfully refreshing for me, I feel very inventive as if I have been freed to explore new things. I hope you enjoy this work and get the pleasure from it that I do.”
