“ He Made a Face: New 2D Work by Thomas Sayre”

Statement:
Similar to the reliance on the serendipitous offerings from dirt in the earth casting sculptural work, the 2D work has used processes employing the qualities of roofing tar, gunshots, smoke, and dirt to create the spirit of the work. Here, in this new work begun in late 2022, the faces emerged solely from the effects of smoke (carbon/”soot”) aimed at an array of  carefully arranged small objects. Besides the very interesting process, I was struck by how the character of the people depicted changed in both appearance and emotion from the original line drawing from photographs.
