Discovering Humanity's Place in the Universe
Speaker: Don Ellison, PhD, from the Department of Physics at North Carolina State University
Dr. Ellison will join in the SECU Daily Planet Theater to discuss the science of the 2019 Nobel prize in Physics.
This year's prizes were given for research at the extremes of our understanding of the Universe. The first discovery of planets outside of the solar system, but in our galactic neighborhood, confirmed that we almost certainly are not alone in the Universe. At the opposite extreme of space and time, a lifetime of work on cosmology set the stage for a deeper understanding of the beginning of the Universe in the Big Bang and its evolution over 14 billion years. Dr. Don Ellison from the Department of Physics at NC State University will discuss the importance of these discoveries and where future work may lead us.
