The Kirby Derby was born out of the spirit of bringing community together to join in an annual theme-filled day of fun. People create costumes, parade entries and soap box derby cars to participate in friendly competition and silliness.
As featured in WALTER Magazine: “Every year since 2002, residents, friends and curious Raleighites don costumes and line the street to watch the annual event. Handbuilt, gravity-powered cars disguised as everything from sharks to cake slices barrel downhill to the tune of cheering neighbors, all racing for the Kirby Cup. Some cars wipe out early on; others are surprisingly fast. Many creations are there less to race than to be seen, eye-catching spectacles that draw oohs and ahhs from fans as they amble past. …the Kirby Derby is a huge showcase of creativity; it’s a celebration of community.”
Kirby Derby is produced by neighbors of Pullen Park Terrace partnering with the Dix Park Conservancy and the City of Raleigh. Neighborhoods, community groups and those with creative expression have participated to grow this event from a few hundred to a few thousand attendees. This is a free event. All ages are welcome to attend with age requirements only for the Soap Box Derby racers. Every parade or soap box car entry must represent the theme, “Holidazed & Confused”.
