Gallery C presents a rare set of hand colored lithographs by Angna Enters (1907-1989). Enters was an enormously gifted painter, writer, and mime. Her fascinating life spanned the arts, dance, and theatre from Hollywood to New York. Honored and celebrated for her work, she received a Guggenheim fellowship and was included in many museum exhibits. This set of costume portrayals bring to mind the work of Toulouse-Lautrec. Enters uses a clean and economic line drawing to give us a personal glimpse of the women of the times. The history of the owner of the rare works is as fascinating as their maker. All of these pieces were collected by Frances Marion (1888-1973) the renowned female screenwriter of the silent movie era. She wrote for and socialized with stars such as Mary Pickford, Greta Garbo, and her eventual husband, cowboy actor Fred Thomson. Her formidable talent earned her two Academy awards and made her a wealthy woman. Frances and Fred had two sons. Son Frederick moved east to North Carolina to join the faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill. The artwork was passed down in the family to Frances’ grandson, Rick Thomson. These intimate portrait works are humorous, tragic, and poignant in turn. They reflect the glamorous and fascinating lives of two women who were each a Tour de Force in their time.
