Details

In this workshop with Russell Johnson, participants will work through "Nine Pound Hammer" and "Sitting On Top Of The World" - two jam session favorites in the key of A on mandolin. Russell will guide participants to construct a basic melody-based solo, discussing the use of "pick-up" notes, "riffs" or "licks" and "tag" notes. Participants will also discuss and work on the mandolin's rhythm contribution (chop) and what "backing-up" a vocalist means on a verse and chorus. Growing up on a farm in rural Four Oaks, North Carolina, Russell Johnson’s first exposure to bluegrass was from an older brother. He got his first mandolin as a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1982, and his first “official” show was in August of 1989. Since then, Johnson has worn a lot of different hats in the music business such as singer, songwriter, producer, mandolinist, recording and sound engineer, band leader, record label and studio owner. He is also the director of the Carolina Bluegrass Band at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he gives lessons for bluegrass guitar and mandolin.
